Groups and match schedules published

11. November 2022

The groups and match schedules for the 2023 men's and women's EuroHockey Championships, which will be held in Mönchengladbach from August 18-27, have been finalized. The highlight of the European field hockey calendar in 2023 will feature 40 matches between 16 teams, all ranked in the top 20 of the world rankings. Highlights in the schedule from a German perspective are the games between the German women against England on August 20 and the German men against the Netherlands on August 21.

The opening night of the EuroHockey Championships 2023 - August 18, 2023 - kicks off in Pool B of the women's competition with two high-class matches. The German women will be hoping for vociferous support when they face the Scotland team in their opening match. Commonwealth Games winners England play Ireland, silver medalists at the 2018 World Cup, in their first match of the European Championships beforehand. In Pool A, 11-time European Championship winners the Netherlands face Spain the following day. Belgium and Italy complete Pool A and the women's opening matches. The men's competition kicks off on Saturday, August 19, with defending champions the Netherlands taking on the increasingly strong French in Pool B. The German men will play their first tournament match in the same group, also on August 19, against Wales. The following day, the men's tournament starts with Spain against Austria and Olympic champions Belgium against England in Pool A.

German teams challenged in outstanding pools

Challenging group opponents await both the German men's and women's teams at the 2023 European Hockey Championships. The Danas will face three teams from the British Isles in Pool B of the women's competition: Scotland (August 18), England (August 20) and Ireland (August 22) are the opponents. On the days of the tournament when the German women are not in action, fans can look forward to the games of the German men. The team of national coach André Henning will face Wales (August 19), defending champion Netherlands (August 21) and France (August 23).

The tournament schedule in brief

The four group lineups were determined by the European Hockey Federation based on the FIH World Ranking (as of September 2022). Each team will play three group matches. The top two finishers in each group will then advance to the semifinals, while the third- and fourth-place teams will compete in Pool C to determine places five through eight. The top six nations in the 2023 EuroHockey Championship automatically qualify for the 2025 European Hockey Championship, while seventh and eighth place will participate in the qualifying tournament to be held in 2024. The winners of the EuroHockey Championship 2023 will receive a place at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Tickets for next summer's EuroHockey Championships 2023 go on sale next week. Please note that match times are determined by the EHF due to the requirements of TV broadcasters or other factors and are subject to change.
